Project Overview
This project is a mobile-responsive onboarding course developed in Articulate Rise for a fictitious hospitality brand, Harborview Resort. The training was designed to provide new hires with a streamlined, accessible introduction to company standards, guest experience expectations, and operational essentials.
Recognizing that many frontline hospitality employees may not have consistent access to desktop computers, the course was built with a mobile-first approach. New hires can easily complete the training on their phones, ensuring accessibility, flexibility, and minimal disruption to operations.
Mobile-First Design
The hospitality industry presents unique training challenges. Staff are often on their feet, working varied shifts, and may not have regular access to a computer. Traditional desktop-based training creates barriers that can delay onboarding and frustrate new employees.
By designing mobile-first, this course meets employees where they are—allowing them to complete training during breaks, before shifts, or from home. The responsive design ensures a seamless experience regardless of device, while the content structure is optimized for shorter viewing sessions.
Interactive & Performance-Focused
The course incorporates interactive elements, knowledge checks, and scenario-based content to reinforce key concepts without overwhelming busy staff.
Content is intentionally concise and performance-focused—delivering only the information employees need to confidently begin their roles while maintaining high service standards. Rather than front-loading every policy and procedure, the course prioritizes what new hires need to know on day one.
Key design elements include:
- Scenario-based learning — Real-world situations help employees practice decision-making before they encounter guests
- Knowledge checks — Brief assessments reinforce understanding without feeling like tests
- Chunked content — Short sections allow learners to complete training in manageable pieces
- Visual-first approach — Images and icons support quick comprehension for diverse learners
Ready to Work, Day One
The goal of this onboarding course is simple: help new hires feel prepared and confident from their first shift. By focusing on essential knowledge, maintaining accessibility through mobile design, and engaging learners through interactivity, the course sets employees up for success without creating unnecessary training burden.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful instructional design can balance business needs (efficient onboarding) with learner needs (accessible, relevant, engaging content).
