Overview

Project Overview

This job aid was developed to support rapid response during a fire emergency in a food truck environment. Designed for high-pressure situations, the resource prioritizes clarity, speed, and usability when seconds matter most.

The job aid was created with a performance-support mindset—serving as a practical, in-the-moment tool that enables staff to act quickly, safely, and in alignment with established safety protocols during an emergency.

The Challenge

When Seconds Matter

Food truck environments present unique safety challenges. Staff work in confined spaces with open flames, hot surfaces, and cooking oils—all potential fire hazards. When an emergency occurs, there's no time to search through a manual or recall training from months ago.

The challenge was to create a resource that could be accessed and understood instantly, even under extreme stress. Traditional safety documentation—dense paragraphs, small text, buried information—simply doesn't work when someone is facing an active fire.

Design Approach

Clarity Over Complexity

The layout features large, highly legible typography and streamlined content to ensure critical actions can be identified immediately. Only essential, step-by-step instructions are included, minimizing cognitive load and eliminating unnecessary information that could delay response.

Key design decisions include:

  • Large typography — Text sized for quick scanning, even in low-light or smoky conditions
  • Step-by-step structure — Clear sequence of actions, numbered for easy following
  • Minimal content — Only what's absolutely necessary, nothing more
  • High contrast — Colors chosen for maximum visibility, accessibility and brand compatibility
  • Visual hierarchy — Most critical information given visual prominence
Accessibility

Designed for Everyone

Emergency resources must work for all employees, regardless of reading level, language proficiency, or visual ability. This job aid was designed with accessibility as a core requirement, not an afterthought.

The design uses clear visual indicators, simple language, and sufficient contrast ratios to ensure the content is accessible to the widest possible audience. In an emergency, no one should be left struggling to understand what to do.

Outcome

Performance Support That Works

This project demonstrates the power of restraint in instructional design. By stripping away everything non-essential and focusing solely on what employees need in the moment, the job aid becomes a tool that can genuinely save lives.

Not every learning solution needs to be interactive or digital. Sometimes the most effective resource is a well-designed piece of paper posted in the right location, ready when it's needed most.
